Are bonfires or recreational fires allowed in the City of Munroe Falls?

Bonfires: A permit is required from the Fire Department and the Akron Regional Air Quality Management (EPA).  Contact the Munroe Falls Fire Department 330-688-7493 or EPA 330-375-2480 for additional information.

Recreational fires are allowed without a permit; but subject to limitations that are strictly enforced.  Recreational fires must comply with the following rules and requirements:

 

    • A recreational fire is not a bonfire.  Bonfires are not permitted.  Recreational fires shall not exceed (3) feet in diameter and a flame height of approximately (2) feet and has had the ground five (5) feet from the base of the fire cleared of all combustible material.

    • Only clean wood (same as you would burn in your living room fireplace) or charcoal is allowed to be burned.  No burning of trash, leaves, brush or building materials is allowed.

    • The fire should be constantly attended by an adult knowledgeable in the use of fire extinguishing equipment, who supervises the fire until the fire has been totally extinguished.

    • Fire-extinguishing equipment, such as buckets, shovels or garden hoses shall be readily available for use at recreational fires.

    • Recreational fires shall not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material unless in an approved container.  Conditions that would cause a fire to spread to within 25 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition.

    • Approved containers are, but not limited to: metal fire rings, commercially manufactured units for open flame type burning, and other configurations conforming to the intent of containing the fire safely.

    • Barbeque pits in outdoor locations shall be at least 18" deep with stones or fire brick lining the perimeter, or other approved noncombustible materials.

    • Barbeque pits outside of buildings shall not be located within 25 feet of combustible walls or roofs or other combustible material.

    • Be a good neighbor.  Ask your neighbors if they have any objection to your recreation fire, and let them know you won't have a fire if any smoke would go into their property. If residents in the area are complaining of smoke, the fire department may request you to extinguish the fire.

    • The fire department has final authority.  If any of the rules are broken, or if the firefighters feel that the recreation fire is unsafe because of wind conditions, excess smoke, or objectionable odors, the fire department will ask you to extinguish the fire.
