Is your home fire safe? 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

√ Matches and lighters are kept out of the reach of children.
 
√Matches and smoking materials are completely extinguished before disposing them.
 
√Lit candles are never left unattended.
 
√There is a "No Smoking in Bed" rule.
 
√Smoke alarms are located on each level of the home and near/or in each sleeping area.
 
√Smoke alarms are tested monthly and their batteries changed once a year.
 
√Space heaters are kept at least three feet away from other items and turned off when everyone is out of the house.
 
√All electrical cords and plugs are in good condition.
 
√There are enough electrical outlets in every room to avoid the need for multiple attachment plugs and extension cords.
 
√Wiring is not placed under rugs, over nails or in high traffic areas.
 
√Flammable liquids are stored in properly labeled, tightly closed non-glass containers. These items are stored away from heaters, furnaces, water heaters and other gas appliances and out of the reach of children.
 
√All flue pipes, vent connectors, gas vents and chimneys are inspected each fall and cleaned and repaired as necessary.
 
√A fire screen is always used when there is a fire in the fireplace.
 
√A metal container with a tight fitting lid is used for ash removal.
 
√The storage area above the stove is free of flammable and combustible items.
 
√The yard is kept clean of leaves, debris and combustible rubbish.
 
√The kitchen is not left unattended when cooking.
 
√Short or snug fitting sleeves are worn during cooking so they won't catch on fire.
 
√Kitchen appliances (ie: toaster, coffee makers, mixers) are turned off and unplugged when they are not in use.
 
√Pot and pan handles on the stove are turned in so they are not easily knocked over.
 
√The water heater is set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit (or lower) to prevent scalds and burns.
 
√The family has developed and practiced an escape plan.
 
√The escape plan includes choosing a safe place outside where the family can meet to be sure everyone got out safely.
 
√Stairs, hallways and exits aren't blocked. Doors and windows can easily be opened.
 
√Lint is removed from the dryer filter after each load.
 
√The house number is easily seen from the roadway, day or night.
