How to Avoid Identity Theft:

  1. Keep your credit cards out of sight until the cashier needs to swipe it.
  2. When in line to purchase goods or services, do not leave the credit card on the counter; identity thieves could take a picture of it with a cell phone camera.
  3. When shopping on the Internet, never give out personal information unless it is a secure website. Secure sites can be identified by use of "https:" in their address or a padlock lock symbol is displayed in your browser.
  4. Do not respond to e-mails asking for bank account or Social Security numbers. Legitimate business will never ask to "verify" someone's account or personal information unless the caller initiates the communication.
  5. Make sure bills and other financial documents are shredded before throwing them away. What most people consider trash, thieves consider gold.
  6. Use secure mailboxes. Criminals can steal bill payments from someone's mailbox before the letter carrier picks them up.
